I stood on the bridge of the ferry, wind in my face, looking ahead to the green mountains of Derry. A few nights before, back in Portsalon, Brian and I had become friendly with the bartender, a girl with hippy braids who was reading a book on Donegal folklore between pints. We talked about where we were headed next, and Brian asked her, “So you call it Derry. Then where’s Londonderry? It says Londonderry on my map.”

I looked down at my feet, coughed, fidgeted to say it was time to head for the pool table. Brian’s intentions were innocent, but it was a no-no of a question, particularly after ten o’clock, and in the company of a dozen sotted Irishmen who might be too eager to give him their opinions on the matter. She saw it for what it was and smiled.

“Well, I’ll explain it like this. There are some people who think it should be called Derry. And there are other people who think it should be called Londonderry.”

Brian waited for the rest of the explanation. “But why?”

Someone wanted a Guinness, and she seemed pleased by the interruption.

“You’ll figure it out.”
